Quick ID tips

Two clues that crack most pest IDs

You don't need to be an entomologist to narrow it down. The location tells you a lot on its own: kitchens draw ants and roaches, bedrooms point to bed bugs, yards mean mosquitoes and stinging insects, and walls or attics suggest rodents or termites.

Then add behavior. Flying, crawling, biting, stinging, in the food, or chewing wood each rules whole groups in or out. Put those two clues together and you're usually down to one or two suspects, which is exactly what the finder above does.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions

Start with two clues: where you're seeing it and what it's doing. A flier in the yard at dusk is probably a mosquito; a flat brown bug that scatters in the kitchen is likely a roach; itchy bites in a line with tiny rust-colored specks on the mattress point to bed bugs. The finder above narrows it down from those clues.

Bites in a row or cluster, usually on skin that touches the mattress, are a classic bed bug sign, especially paired with small rust-colored specks on the sheets or seams. Fleas also bite, but usually around the ankles.

When the ID isn't obvious, the fastest path is a local pro. The inspection is free, a licensed technician identifies the species on the spot, and you get a no-obligation quote. Use the button above to get matched.

Most household pests are nuisances, but some carry real risks: rodents and roaches can spread bacteria, mosquitoes and ticks transmit disease, and stinging insects can trigger allergic reactions. Each pest guide covers the specific health angle in detail.
